Parish Church

Castelo Rodrigo

Castelo Rodrigo

The parish church is dedicated to Our Lady of Rocamador. It was founded in the 13th century by the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Rocamador, who gave succour to pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. It maintains its original form and is an example of the transition from Romanesque to gothic. Later works in the 16th and 17th centuries altered the church’s structure. It consists of three naves, porticoes with straight lintels and an angular pediment. Inside we can admire an ornamented wooden ceiling painted with scenes of saints, 18th century blue and white tiles in the chancel and Hispanic-Arab tiles at the high altar. The church was restored in the late 1990s as part of the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal Programme.
