Historical Villages of Portugal
The Aldeias Históricas de Portugal – Tourism Development Association, made up of 12 villages in the central inland region of Portugal with an exuberant historical heritage, aims for these villages to become the country’s first carbon-neutral tourist destination through its project “Towards Carbon Neutrality.” This project was formally launched on March 17, 2023, in the Historic Village of Idanha-a-Velha, where, among others, Greenvolt Comunidades is one of the partners that will help achieve this major goal.
Aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Deal, this represents a decisive step toward making the network of villages the first in Europe to benefit from an efficient position in the water and energy sectors, based on the strategic vision: “Aldeias Históricas de Portugal: a sustainable and pioneering urban network in its contribution to green growth in low-density territories.”
The first location for the implementation of this Pilot Project was the Historic Village of Sortelha, with a subsequent expansion planned for the Historic Village of Linhares da Beira. The ultimate objective is to replicate the project across all remaining villages.
