Houses with porches / Casa dos Arcos

The 16th-17th century houses that as a whole form a portico with five unequal openings, defined by pillars with rectangular or octagonal cross-sections, are the only vestige of the market porches or “balconies” that occupied the north side of the plaza from times immemorial. To the right, replacing other identical houses, the Casa dos Arcos was built in the mid-19th century. This building demonstrated erudite features and retained the public usufruct of the “balconies” which had disappeared, as it contained a monumental gallery formed by four semi-circular arches that embrace two of the building’s three storeys.
