New Fountain
Trancoso
Trancoso
Built in 1589, it is a remarkable Renaissance fountain of the type that associates the back with a volume in the form of a small temple, defined by seven columns. It has the royal coat of arms at the centre of the back and engraved on the plinths over which the front columns are set are the date of the construction of the fountain and the inscription “God help me”. According to the Paroquial Memoirs of the 18th century, the pyramidal cover of the fountain was crowned with a large statue of a man, called João Durão – the name by which the fountain was also known.
