The old town centre has many wells in public places and private buildings. One of them is Mestre Well, whose location and name are intriguing. It was located near Gato Preto House. Knowing that any synagogue is not just a place of worship but also a place for meeting and learning, it soon becomes clear that the evolution of the toponym (magister-maestre-meetre-mestre), i.e. the one who teaches could well be the Rabbi and this spring most likely fed the Mikveh.
