Castelo Mendo

The Town Gate is the main entryway into the town. Flanked by two turrets that protect it, it has an ogival arch and the numerous stonemasons’ marks on the ashlars are clearly visible. Outside, next to the turrets, two berrões (or verracos – stone monuments), zoomorphic sculptures with mutilated heads, symbols of the Vettone people, welcome visitors. The Town Gate, of relevant monumentality, was built at the same time as the wall which protected the medieval outskirts, therefore, late 13th century, during the reign of the farmer king, King Dinis.
