Sun Gate

Castelo Mendo
The Sun Gate is so called because it faces east. Numerous stonemasons’ marks are visible on it and it is one of the access points in the second wall, that is, from the reign of King Dinis (late 13th century). By exiting through this gate, the medieval path leading to Porto de S. Miguel could be directly accessed, an important pedestrian crossing of the Côa River.
