The inner or great gate dates back to the 17th century and was designed by Jerónimo Velho de Azevedo. It has a bomb-proof domed roof and a curved downward passage. Both sides of the passage have a huge guard house with a fireplace, latrines and washbasins, plus a prison. The guard house of the outer gate currently houses CEAMA, an organisation that sponsors research and provides educational descriptions of the fortress.
