Almeida
The Praça Alta is located in the Santa Barbara bulwark, and it is the highest point in the Fortress. In times past, it was the nerve centre for keeping watch on enemy troops laying seige to the city. Today, this place gives visitors a panoramic view over the Village. The tomb of John Beresford is found in the square. He was an English officer who led the Portuguese army and died in Ciudad Rodrigo in 1812 during the Napoleonic campaigns.
