Ruins of the Keep

The ruins of the Keep still survive in the castle, bordered by a citadel on the northern top of the oldest walled enclosure. In the 16th century drawings by Duarte de Armas, the Keep was still depicted with a roof and merlons. The tower was built adjacent to the first wall, belonging to the end of the 12th century, contrary to Romanesque castles that established the keep isolated in the centre of the enclosure, making this tower a clear example of Gothic architecture.
