Chafariz Mono

The Pinheiro Family manor displays the curious fact of having a large granite fountain on its facade, the Chafariz Mono, which is in stark contrast with the whitewashed wall. It is built from ashlar stone, with a back topped by a trilobed pediment and flanked by Tuscan pilasters, which accompany the lobes, bring finished off with a stone scroll. It displays various phytomorphic, rope and shell decorative motifs surrounding a quadrilobe oculus; under it, there is a spout in the form of a grotesque face, surrounded by phytomorphic elements and topped by a shell, which from which water springs forth though a bronze tube into a rectangular tank. Its name appears to be derived from the popular name given to the grotesque face: “mono”, an ugly or crude doll. Parece ser contemporâneo da construção do edifício, em pleno século XVIII.
