Monsanto

Singer José Afonso (1929-1987), known by his family nickname Zeca Afonso, was a central figure in the renewal movement of Portuguese music in the 1960s, with work and recognition that extended into the 70s and 80s, who bought this house, which was never remodelled. It is now a project of the José Afonso Association and the Municipality of Idanha-a-Nova to transform the space into a house museum dedicated to the singer, who sought to find a place of inspiration and rest here. The awakening of his liking for Monsanto is, perhaps, not alien to his knowledge of Beira Baixa popular songs, as he recorded various and notable versions of the famous local song of Srª do Almortão, specially the first version included in the record "Cantares do Andarilho" (1968).
