The history of the castle appears to date back to the 11th century, when the area was conquered by D. Fernando the Great during the Conquest of the Beiras.
Later, it was rebuilt by D. Sancho I, but eventually suffered new Muslim assaults. Thus, the important construction works carried out by D. Dinis in 1295.
Its geostrategic position is widely recognized within the context of the Christian Reconquest and later in the strengthening of the national autonomy in relation to Castile
