Christ the King

Castelo Rodrigo

Castelo Rodrigo

The municipality joined efforts and focused on the construction of a group of infrastructures that were religious in nature, among which we highlight the figure of Christ the King. This was conceived and built under an initiative of the Archpresbytery of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. This was therefore one more step towards a definitive sanctification of the natural altar of Marofa, with the intent of the archpresbytery to honour the royalty of Our Lord, the statue becoming a public monument, a witness to the vibrant and obedient faith of the people of Figueira to Christ the King. Sculpted from white granite and six metres high, the statue designed by sculptor Joaquim Barreira was placed on the promontory on July 1956, where it remains today. The statue was inaugurated on the day of the Pilgrimage to the sanctuary of Marofa, during the festival that takes place there every 13 August.
