Church Santa Maria de Guimarães
Trancoso
Trancoso
This is one of the oldest churches of Trancoso, but its current appearance is the result of a major late-baroque remodelling project. Its facade, bearing the coat of arms of the Counts of Povolide, is remarkable, as is the main chapel, with a painted and gilded altar piece, and a coffered ceiling painted with hagiographic figures, the work of Isidoro Faria. It retains significant vestiges that predate the works of the 18th century, specifically: a fragment of pre-Romanesque sculptured frieze, a part of the structure of the Romanesque-Gothic temple (under construction in 1171) and an arcosolium with a spendid mural painting from the 15th-16th centuries.
