Jose Saramago visited Castelo Novo twice on a trip between Lisbon and Castelo Rodrigo, which he immortalised in two books, Journey to Portugal and The Elephant’s Journey. Concerning Castelo Novo, he wrote in Journey to Portugal., "Castelo Novo is one of the most moving memories of the traveller. Maybe he’ll come back one day, maybe never, and he might even avoid returning, only because there are experiences that cannot be repeated.”
