Necropolis of São Miguel

Monsanto

Monsanto

The chapel is connected with a necropolis that preceded its construction, but dating from the same time as its existence. The exposed tombs of this cemetery are, for the most part, excavated in the rock outroppings, being anthropomorphic, rectangular or trapezoidal, or more rarely, in sarcophagi, although there are other types found here, such as headstones. The inside was also used for burials and outside, Gothic arcosolia were dug for the placing of tombs. Its use extended, then, over a long period of time, which can be marked off between the 12th century, or even earlier, to the 15th century, the early 19th century being the end date.
