Necropolis of primitive graves

Trancoso

Trancoso

Generically dated from the 8th-12th centuries, it is one of the most powerful evidences of the primitive occupation of Trancoso. Here we find 32 tombs dug into the rock and it is a rare example of the monolithic lids that covered this type of tomb. As for the tombs, overall, they are anthropomorphic in shape, being laid out according to the rules of the Church (the head to the west), being aligned, and sometimes, overlaying each other, which attests to the long period of time this place was used as a burial ground. Classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1978.
