Pillory

Castelo Mendo

Castelo Mendo

The Pillory was a legal and administrative symbol, and at seven meters high, it is one of the tallest in Beira Interior. Located in a square created by the São Pedro Church, it is a testament to one of the most important points of 16th century urbanism. Built around 1510, it is a pillory cage, with platform and octagonal column. The capital has rings decorated with different motifs, including chains, cables and flowers. The cage, with its smaller columns supporting the torso section, is crowned by a weathervane in the shape of a split pennant. It has been a Property of Public Interest since 1933.
