Almeida

Praça Alta is the highest point of the whole fortress and is located in the Santa Bárbara bulwark. It dates back to the 17th century and consists of 23 cannon stations. It was once the nerve centre for watching besiegers’ movements. Today it is the perfect spot for visitors to enjoy the view of the town. Praça Alta has platforms for firing mortars and houses the tomb of John Beresford, a British officer who commanded the Portuguese army. He died in 1812 in the second siege of Ciudad Rodrigo during the Napoleonic campaigns.
