Castelo Rodrigo

The Marofa mountain, range, at about 977 metres altitude, is a natural viewpoint from which one can enjoy a scenic display of rare beauty. From there one can see Trás-os-Montes, the province of Salamanca, the neighbouring municipalities of Beira and one can imagine the bubbling of the waters of the Douro, Águeda and Côa Rivers. The veneration of “Saint Mary” is strong in the heart of the people of Figueira and it was before the middle of the 20th century that the consecration of the Marofa Mountain as a Marian altar was starting to be planned. So, with solemnity and fervor, in full celebration of the “Corpus Christi”, during a ceremony that took place at the Main Church of the municipal seat, the municipality was consecrated to Our Lady on 24 June 1943. Faith and devotion to “Our Lady” was very evident in the involvement of the anonymous public, but also by civic and religious authorities, culminating in the sanctification of the Marofa mountain range.
