Solar dos Priores de Monsanto

Monsanto

Monsanto

The slope of the terrain where the parish church was built was compensated for by a strong and regular foundation, facilitating the making of a short street on the north and east sides. It is precisely at the base of the sunny front that this unique building, commonly known as the Solar dos Priores de Monsanto (Manor House of the Monsanto Priors), dating from the 17th century, is located. This sunny house, dated to the 17th century, has exposed ashlar stone on its facade, trimmed with a cornice and protruding cylindrical gargoyles. There is a covered balcony with a solid guardrail, on which rest columns with Ionic capitals that support the beams of the porch roof. Under the balcony, there is a semi-circular span extending below the level of the street, allowing access to the ground floor. The coat of arms of the Carvalho family is located between the windows of the second storey. Contrary to what the name of the house suggests, this is not the actual glebe, which today is located in Rua da Fonte Nova, nº 3.
