Stone representation of the “Eternal Kiss”

Sortelha

Sortelha

It is said that one night a host of Moors surrounded the fortress of Sortelha to retake that strategic site. In the castle was the alcalde, his wife and his daughter, a beautiful maiden.
- “What a handsome man!” she exclaimed, following him with her eyes.
- “What a beautiful woman!” thought the Moor from the top of the wall.
From that moment on, neither one stopped thinking about meeting each other.
And so, the Moorish chief promised freedom to one Christian prisoner, under the conditions he imposed:
- “You will speak alone with the maiden and open the gate to her.”
The young woman’s mother, who some said was a sorceress, became aware that something was happening that night.
The lovers were together next to the ramparts and were kissing.
- “Wretches! I curse you and turn you to stone!” – screamed the sorceress.
And the two, embracing lip to lip, were turned to stone. And thus they remained forever.
