On the account of its optimal strategic location and a strong commercial orientation, Trancoso was very well-known by its important fairs and markets that turned the economy of the municipality and the whole nearby region. From the early centuries of the Portuguese nationality, the Saint Bartholomew Fair (Fair Charter granted by King Afonso III in 1273) acquired great relevance and it was so significant for the region that special protection was granted to it by our Kings, with great benefits and privileges. As far back as the 16th century, Gil Vicente himself, in his play ‘Auto de Mofina Mendes’, mentioned the well-known Trancoso Fair, which remained in the 19th century the most eagerly awaited event in the region.

For three days, the Historic Village of Trancoso will attempt to revive this century-old tradition, reminding daily events, figures, and scenes that marked the importance of the Trancoso Fair over the years.

In addition to the market bustle, entertainment, games, and traditional music, the theatrical tours by night allow for unique experiences with scenes of light and darkness.
Moreover, gastronomy will play a major role with the tasting of tradition-based new recipes.
